The ceiling fan has to be secured to the ceiling in an appropriate fashion, either attached directly to a ceiling joist, or through brace b/n the ceiling joists. I purchased these fans as I'm 6'2", ceilings are 8' and they seemed to be the fans with the blades closest to the ceiling so I don't lose a hand while I'm getting dressed in the morning. They light is perhaps not the most attractive, but it lights the room well. The base of these fans are larger than other fans, and may appear bulkier towards the ceiling. We purchased 4 of these fans, as well as another model from Minka Aire. Compared to the other model of Minka Aire (purchased from Restoration Hardware), these are much easier to install. After I installed all 5 fans, I noticed The person installing it has to have a knowledge of how to attach wires....
