French Chandelier - Questions & Answers

About How Big In Diameter Is A Large 1930s French Chandelier?
A chandelier that would fit on a 31.5 ft. (width) and a 35 ft. (length) stage with another chandelier of the same size. So basically, 2 French chandeliers from the 1930s that will fit on that size stage, with some room in between the chandeliers and some room between the side curtains on the stage.
A 4' wide chandelier is about as wide as you would be able to find. The problem would be finding 2 exactly alike. If you did not mind using reproductions, you could save a lot of money (spend hundreds instead of thousands of $), have a bigger selection, and spend less time searching for 2 of the same style.

How do you say chandelier in french?
Chandelier.
or Lustre.

Lustre means only chandelier, whereas "chandelier" could mean candlestick.

Candelabra is used for a chandelier with several branches.

French cast Brass Chandelier leaf?

Please look at this pic. Do you know who made it? Can you identify what style of brass chandelier it is? I am trying to restore it, any advice about restoring this type of brass ... it is at least 40 years old and weighs over 50 pounds.
Very difficult to tell who manufactured your beautiful chandelier without looking at it close up. I did look it up in my design book and because of the acathus leaf design, I believe it to be in the Louis XVI Travail Francais design. The style often used the leaf design to accent furniture legs, arms on chandeliers and to stylize artistically. That being said, I'm not certain whether I would recommend doing anything to the brass. Patina is what makes these vintage pieces valuable. Other than re-wiring it, perhaps adding some shade to the top which is how they are usually seen, I would merely clean and polish the metal. I would not use the cream type of cleaner, either, as you will create a nightmare for yourself trying to get it out of the crevices.

Can I refinish my kitchen cabinets myself with gel stain?
Currently, they have a maple finish and are wood. I would like to add more amber or bronze tones to compliment my bronze country french chandelier. Is it possible to do this without dismantling the cabinets? Thanks.
do you mean dismantling as in taking off the door? Yes.. you can do it without taking the doors off.. but its much easier to take the doors off, and much less messy because you can take them out of the house. You can use painters tape to number the cabinet doors and then number where they go on the wall to remember which door goes where! You will want to lightly sand the cabinet doors and of course.. if at all possible, do a test run on the inside of one of the cabinet doors (if it has the same finish as the outsitde) so that you can test your results. We used foam brushes and rags to apply our stain. It took a few coats. I also polyeurathaned twice.

You need to have it appraised. Once that's done you'll know how much it's worth and how much you'd get for it by selling it.
