The kitchen light bulb is over 10 years old, and the laundry room bulbs are about 4 years old. Q: I have two overhead fluorescent light fixtures — one in the kitchen ceiling and one in the laundry room — that are not working properly. What is wrong, and what can I do to fix it. Q: First, make sure that you are using the correct fluorescent bulb type for your fixtures. After the switch has been turned on, the light bulbs may take several minutes before they actually come on. Sometimes they will come on immediately. These lighting fixtures are all over 10 years old. Newer, more energy-efficient fixtures, use T8 bulbs. If it's an older fixture, it likely uses a T12 bulb. A good indicator it's time to change the bulbs is if they get dark gray on the ends. It could be time to replace your bulbs....

Garage fluorescent lights are flakey. Does this sound like a ballast problem?We have 5 ceiling-mounted, hard-wired, dual-tube flourescent lights in our garage, switched from the wall. The ballasts are black rectangular boxes.
When I turn them on, two of them don't usually light. If I flip the switch 15-20 times, I am not clear of what you actually have. But I assume/picture that you have five seperate fixtures and each one holds two bulbs.
If that is the case it could be the bulbs. Look at the end of the bulbs and if they are black on the white part |

I've been working with flybacks, x ray transformers, NST's for quite some time but i always wondered abt ballast's. Your best and cheapest bet to do this would be a car coil, avail at most parts stores, or go to a auto wrecker and get one. Heck, get the whole distributor and coil.
