Is It Possible To Safely Convert A Hardwired Wall Sconce Into A Plug-in? I would like to convert a hardwired wall sconce into a plug-in lamp. How easy is this to safely do? How is the exposed back of the fixture covered? Is there a way to turn the fixture on and off, other than unplugging it?
I've looked for DIY video or step by step instructions and can't find what I'm looking for. The sconce isn't installed. I am purchasing on hardwired one and want to convert it to a plug in type. If the wall sconce is switched, then turning your lamp on,off will be done the same way. Turn power off at breaker controlling the wall sconce,remove sconce, there should already be a box there, unwire the sconce and replace with a receptacle, install a cover plate and you are done. Remember this is a lighting circuit, (15A max.) so you cannot use any heavy draw appliances. >>>EDIT<<<< OH, Why didn't you say so in the first place? Well any way, the switching still stands if it has a switch, no problem. If it doesn't you'll have to purchase one, a rotary or push button would be best. you'd have to drill a hole in the sconce to mount the switch, OR, is this going to be some sort of table lamp? If so I would mount the sconce to some type of attractive wood, Say walnut or oak. Make a base shaped like an upside down T, where the top of the T would be the base and the body of the T would stand upright. this would give you a firm base and also cover the back of the sconce. You could mount the switch to either the wood or the body of the sconce. As for wiring take one lead from the sconce and run it to the switch, wire the other lead directly to the length of lamp cord with plug that you will need to purchase and finally wire the last lead from the lamp cord to the other side of the switch. You could make the top of the upright (backing to sconce) a fancy curve or arch to add to the decorative(ness) of the walnut or oak wood that you chose.

I want to wire in a wall sconce. I have an outlet directly below.? Does anyone know the easiest way to wire in a wall sconce. I want a switch between the power source( outlet) and the sconce. I dont want to rip up drywall , is it possible to feed a wire through a hole in the drywall to the switch and source or is that against code. Im not a whiz at electrical work and want it to be done properly. Any advise would be appreciated.
No problem. You make a hole in the drywall the same size as the box you will be inserting for the switch. You make another hole for a box where your sconce will go. Fish a wire up from the outlet to the switch hole, and one from the switch hole to the sconce hole. Put the wires into the new boxes and install the boxes into the wall. Leave 6 inches of free wire outside each box. Install a switch in one and the lamp in the other. Then connect the feed wire to your outlet. Buy boxes that have the wings that open behind the drywall and grip the wall when you tighten the screws. You will not need to patch or paint any drywall this way. To comply with the code you only need to install boxes for your connections and devises. The white and ground wire in the 14/2 with ground, NMB type cable (romex) will go directly from the outlet to the light, passing through the switch box. The black will run from the receptacle to the switch and from the switch to the lamp using the 2 screws on the switch. The switch interrupts the power in the black wire. Check your local code to make sure romex is allowed. If not, you need to use MC cable.
